The Military Spouse

More than 25,000 active duty personnel call Northeast Florida home. Many active duty members are married, and these trailing spouses comprise a significant part of Jacksonville’s dynamic workforce.

WorkSource, the regional workforce development organization, has been tasked with uncovering issues that military spouses face and helping develop solutions.

Common challenges for spouses include managing challenging schedules for military members, both onshore and while deployed, finding affordable childcare, and developing a network to help in the job search. Spouses also say that they lacked resources to study the local economy.

WorkSource plans to dedicate resources to assisting military spouse in their job search. The Navy lists spouse employment as one of the most important factors in retention for military members. It’s also an issue that may make a difference in the upcoming Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process.

For these reasons, WorkSource has hired a Military Spouse Employment Advocate to work with the local military bases, spouse employment programs and other groups that reach out to military families. The Military Spouse Employment Advocate will research employment issues, help spouses learn about services available at WorkSource Career Centers, and help educate local companies about how military spouses can make a difference in their workforce.
